The BIG Sing & Dance

Funded by and in collaboration with Captivate Nottingham and Inspire Music, Next Door Dance delivered a large-scale outdoor event involving the children of Ashfield.

7 Schools took part in singing and dance workshops culminating in a performance at Ashfield plaza in June 2024. Students learnt 2 songs with accompanying movement and performed them live for the public. We had a blast! Feedback from teachers and students was excellent and we even featured on East Midlands Today!

NHS 75th birthday

In winter 2023 Next Door Dance were privileged to be asked to be part of Nottingham University Hospitals celebrations of the NHS turning 75. Staff members worked with poet Matt Miller to create poems about their time and experience whilst working within the National Health Service. Next Door Dance worked with members of the youth company and staff members at Nottingham's Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital to create responses to the selection of poems that were performed for other members of staff as part of a national celebration event.

SOAK’ - Stopgap collaboration

In October 2023 we took part in a week-long intensive with StopGap Dance company.

Commissioned by Inspire Youth Arts, this project brought together 4   Next Door Dance's Youth Company members and 3 professional dancers from StopGap to create a piece choreographed by Siobhan Hayes. The performance of 'Soak' premiered at Southside St Catherine's Hall in Lincoln as part of the Unify Festival in November 2023.

Here and Now

Here and Now is a national and local celebration of culture within communities. 40 brand new projects will take place in and around 40 arts centres across the country, led by artists and co-created with local people. The project is supported by Arts Council England and Future Arts Centres, marking The National Lottery’s 25th birthday.

We have had the pleasure of working alongside Attenborough Arts Centre on this project which happened in two parts. The first part, we created bespoke, accessible choreography which we then shared with the 25,000-strong crowd at a Leicester Tigers game at Welford Road on 29th February 2020. During the game, Tigers launched their Inclusivity Celebration, along with sunflower lanyards and sensory backpacks. NDD, with around 40 dancers performed alongside the pitch with sunflowers at half time to spread the message that small adjustments can make life more accessible for everyone. Attenborough Arts Centre are supporting the creation of this work in order to forge a link between the local rugby community and the accessible arts space on their doorstep.

For the second part of the project, we worked with local film maker, Keith Allott, to create a film following a rugby fan. Listening to the commentary of a game, follow their journey as the action unfolds around them in the wider world. Check out our film Crouch, Bind, Set!

The Grandest of Stages.

In July 2018 we collaborated with filmmaker Will Carman to create The Grandest of Stages; a dance film that celebrates the glory of football in all its forms.

We worked with a brilliant cast of 213 participants, ranging from 5 to 75 years old! A wonderful mix of football and dance enthusiasts generously offered their energy and creativity to create this tribute to our nation's favourite sport.

The Grandest of Stages was generously supported by Inspire Youth Arts, Notts County Football in the Community and Arts Council England.

If you are interested in sharing this film at an event or as part of a programme of work, please get in touch with us.

Shadow Movement Project (SMP)

is an intensive project for young dancers who are interested in developing their choreographic skills. Participants collaborate with Next Door Dance professionals in a non-heirarchical environment. Over the course of a week a dance performance or film is created. In the past we have collaborated with some really exciting practitioners, including sound artists, film makers and orchestras!

Our most recent SMP 9, Together || Apart was made in collaboration with a film artist Mark Nelson and created remotely during lockdown, August 2020.  Next Door Dance and the young performers created the movement over 3 days via Zoom which was then filmed individually in the studio and edited together to make one continuous solo.

Next Door Dance would like to give a special thanks to all at Inspire Youth Arts but in particular Jon Bevan for his continuous support of Next Door Dance, especially with the Together || Apart project, made during the challenging times of COVID-19.
